Requirements of "Long-Term Resident(LTR)"

A "Long-Term Resident(LTR)" is a person who is granted residence by the Minister of Justice for a certain period of stay in consideration of special reasons, and there is no limit to the scope of activities in Japan, but the period of stay is the specified period.
In addition, there are two types of "Long-Term Resident(LTR)" : "Notification of Long-Term Resident(LTR)" and " Long-Term Resident(LTR) outside the notification".
A "Long-Term Resident(LTR) outside the notification" is a status of residence that does not correspond to the "Notification of Long-Term Resident(LTR)" but is given in consideration of special circumstances.

About the contents of the notification of "Long-Term Resident(LTR)"

Notification of "Long-Term Resident(LTR)" is from No. 1 to No. 8, and the contents are as follows.

Examples where " Long-Term Resident(LTR) outside the notification" is permitted

The following are examples of " Long-Term Resident(LTR) outside the notification".

  1. Certified refugees
    Persons recognized as refugees other than Notification No. 1
  2. Long-Term Resident after divorce
    Those who wish to continue to stay in Japan after divorcing a spouse who is a Japanese, permanent resident or special permanent resident
  3. Long-Term Resident whose spouse died
    Those who wish to continue to stay in Japan after the death of a Japanese, permanent resident or special permanent resident spouse
  4. Long-Term Resident who support Japanese children
    A person who custody and educate a Japanese child
  5. Those who have virtually collapsed their marriage to a Japanese, permanent resident or special permanent resident and wish to continue to stay in Japan
  6. Refugee application was denied, but a person who applied for permission to change to a "Long-Term Resident" after receiving a decision on the status of residence "Designated Activity" (period of stay of 1 year) in consideration of special circumstances.
  7. Those who are resident with the status of residence of "Dependent" and who will find employment after graduating from elementary, junior high and high school in Japan
  8. Those who have applied for permission to change from "Designated Activities" (outside the notification / employed after graduating from high school in Japan) to "Long-Term Resident"

Point to be noted

Please note that you cannot apply for a "Certificate of Residence Status" with "Long-Term Resident outside the notification".
